Declan Murphy, MS, LMFT

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I believe a key goal of therapy and most therapy sessions is integration. By making contact with emotions and thoughts, then keeping what is useful and letting go of the rest, I hope to help people integrate new experiences or past challenges.

My approach

I often use Gestalt therapy, which looks to expand awareness, restore people to wholeness, and integrate experiences. CBT is used to challenge thoughts and observe patterns that are getting in the way. DBT can be useful to improve self-soothing and avoid emotional pitfalls.

My focus

I enjoy helping people improve their interactions with others. I typically work with clients dealing with depression, abuse, codependency, and improving self-esteem.

My communication style

I speak calmly. It is an open environment to say what needs to be said without judgment. My goal is to lead you to the core of your being, not the core of my being.

My journey to mental healthcare

I remember being riveted by any movie scene that had therapy. I noticed I became very interested in any class that touched on the topic of therapy or mental health. After giving it some careful thought and gaining experience helping others through life challenges, I pursued the education to become a therapist and have thoroughly enjoyed the work.

My goals for you

I ask questions with a desire for you to set the goal, and for you to choose the answer. I offer additional items, with you having the final vote.

My first session with you

I ask questions. I work with you to name the problem, with the belief, name it to tame it. I offer ideas of what could be missing but ask what you think to make sure we are in agreement. Then, we try to add that into your life through the therapy session or by actions taken outside of therapy or with homework.
